- John Cop(e)land the elder of Bulkington, mercer, was survived by three daughters and a son: Hannah Copland of Wolvey, spinster; Mary, wife of William Slingsby of Bulkington, farmer; Elizabeth, wife of Randal Lea of Rugby, baker and John Copland the younger of Bulkington, mercer. John Copland the younger and his wife Elizabeth had one daughter, Ann, who died in 1745. Her paternal aunts were her co-heirs. John Copland the younger secured a mortgage of £100 from Patrick Simson of Coventry, gent., on a messuage and land in the Town Fields, Bulkington, 14 October 1737 (CR 715/398). Hannah Copland was infirm in body, and so conveyed (copy) her estate and interest to Randal Lea and his wife in exchange for £7 per annum for her life, 17 February 1746 (CR 715/399). Deed (copy) to lead to uses of a fine between Randal Lea and Elizabeth his wife, and Symon Knight of Rugby, surgeon, 14 January 1748 (CR 715/400-1). The deed was to break an entail relating to two-thirds of a messuage and land in Bulkington, two-thirds of a messuage occupied by Elizabeth Copland (his widow), and of another messuage. Randal Lea sold his share in the property to William Slingsby the younger of Combe, yeoman, for £255.13s.4d., 11-12 May 1755 (CR 715/402-3). Slingsby paid off earlier mortgages and secured a mortgage of £300 from Timothy Russell of Hopsford, Withybrook, grazier, on the property, 12-13 May 1755 (CR 715/404-6). Extract from the Bulkington Inclosure Award re the award to Elizabeth Copeland, widow, of 38a.2r.6p., 26 February 1771 (CR 715/407). Elizabeth Copeland secured a mortgage of £77 from Richard Carr of Marston Jabbett on the property, 26 February 1771 (CR 715/408). Endorsed that the mortgage was repaid, 10 December 1784. Will (attested copy) of Randal Lea, 10 June 1780 (CR 715/409). Refers to two-thirds of an undivided estate in Bulkington. A disagreement concerning the title to Elizabeth Copeland's land and a messuage in Bulkington arose between William Slingsby the elder of Bulkington, farmer (son and heir of the late William Slingsby and his wife Mary, and grandson of John Copland), his eldest son, William Slingsby the younger, a soldier in the Leicestershire Militia, Michael Cooper of Long Itchington, shop-keeper, and his wife Fanny (one of the daughters of the late Randal Lea and his wife Elizabeth, and a granddaughter of the late John Copland). An agreement was made to divide the land equally between them, and to sell the messuage and divide the proceeds equally, 5-6 March 1783 (CR 715/415-17). Cooper and his wife secured a mortgage of £400 from Grace Biggs of Wyken, widow, on the property, 17 July 1789 (CR 715/418). The mortgage, reduced to £300, was transferred by Mrs Biggs's executors to the executors of Joseph Cattell of Coventry, butcher, 15-16 November 1796 (CR 715/419-21). The mortgage, increased to £500, was transferred to the Rev. Richard Lickorish of Wolston, M.D., 20-21 August 1807 (CR 715/422-3). Cooper and his wife sold the property to John Johnson of Coombe Fields, grazier, for £1,380, and paid off the mortgage, 28-29 September 1821 (CR 715/424-6) - ref. CR 715/398-426 - date: 1737-1821
Thomas Eagle was arbitrator of a dispute concerning land in Bulkington affected by the Inclosure Act of 1771. He divided land in Bulkington [field names given] between William Jeffery of Bulkington, farmer, and Elizabeth Sheers of Attleborough, Nuneaton, and Mary Mawson of Monks Kirby, widow, 6 October 1798 (CR 715/357). Elizabeth Sheers and Mary Mawson sold an undivided third share in two messuages and various closes [named] in Bulkington, to James Price of Coventry, ribbon-manufacturer, for £31, 8 October 1798 (CR 715/358). Mary Mawson sold her undivided third share in the same property to Price for £109, 28-9 September 1801 (CR 715/359-60). Price secured a mortgage of £100 on an undivided third of the property from Thomas Overton of Long Itchington, miller, 28 June 1805 (CR 715/361). The mortgage was transferred from Overton (then of Coventry) and an additional £50 secured from James Moulton of Fernhill, Kenilworth, farmer, 9 June 1809 (362). The old mortgage had been paid off, but a new one of £280 from Moulton was secured on Price's two-thirds share, 6-7 January 1814 (363-4). Endorsed with receipts for payments of interest. Price transferred his interest in the undivided two-thirds to John Horsfall of Coventry, 15 January 1823 (CR 715/365). The consideration was £150 which Price owed to Horsfall on a stated account. Horsfall took over the mortgage. Lease missing. The £280 mortgage to Moulton was paid off by securing another mortgage of £300 from John Meigh of Coventry, currier, 28-29 October 1833 (CR 715/366-8). Meigh transferred the mortgage to John Johnson of Combe Fields, gent., 29-30 July 1838 (CR 715/369). Lease enclosed. One of the trustees involved died before the deed could be executed. The deed is endorsed with the transfer of his interest, 28 June 1841. Thomas Wood of Nuneaton, cordwainer, and Elizabeth his wife, and Thomas Goodyer of Bulkington, ribbonweaver, and Mary his wife, sold land and buildings in Bulkington to John Johnson for £694.10s.0d., 9-10 August 1839. Elizabeth and Mary were the only children and co-heirs of the late William Jeffery. Map of the estate by [Edward?] Phillips of Coventry, 1838, attached to back of deed. Endorsed that some of the property was sold off in 1903 (CR 715/370). Sarah Price, widow of James Price of Coventry, silkman, claimed to have a share in the property conveyed in CR 715/370. To remove doubts and satisfy her claims, she was paid £25 by Johnson, 12-13 August 1839 (CR 715/371). FILE - Deed to lead to uses of a fine (copy): Thomas Lea of Bulkington, yeoman, and Elizabeth his wife, wished to break an entail in their property. They conveyed the property to John Cooper of Hinckley, Leics., barber, 24 December 1773 (CR 715/344-5). The property included a messuage in Bulkington, and 10a. in Butt Field, Bulkington. Probate grant (copy) for Thomas Lees [sic] of Bulkington, gent., 29 March and 1 April 1791 (CR 715/346). Will (copy) of Bartholomew Starkey of Ryton, Bulkington, silkweaver and shopkeeper, 29 December 1815 (CR 715/347). Refers to property in Ryton. Probate grant (copy) for Thomas Rogers of Bulkington, farmer, 16 February 1825 and 12 August 1828 (CR 715/348). Bartholomew Starkey bequeathed a messuage and land in Ryton (after various life interests) to his nephews, John Starkey of Ryton, baker, and William Rowley of Foleshill. Rowley sold his share in the property to John Starkey for £200, 8 April 1859 (CR 715/349). John Starkey secured a mortgage of £200 from Mary Pridmore of Coleshill, widow, on the property, 9 April 1859 (CR 715/350). - Joseph Mowe of Bulkington, carrier, secured a mortgage of £120 from Richard Morton of Coventry, fruiterer, on messuages (recently converted from a barn and others recently erected) in Bulkington, 25 April 1862. An additional £40 was added to the mortgage, 28 November 1862 (CR 715/333-4). Mowe sold the property for £200 to William Wringrose of Bulkington, grocer and draper. The mortgage was paid off to John Vine of Coventry, bailiff, executor of the late Richard Morton, 18 April 1871 (CR 715/335). Wringrose's executor, Thomas Parker of Catford, Kent, sold the property for £250 to Sarah Ann Brown, wife of Ebenezer Brown of Attleborough, Nuneaton, esq., 22 December 1902. Plan (CR 715/336-7). Samuel Heydon of Foleshill, ironfounder, and William Melling of Wigan, Lancs., engineer, transferred a mortgage of £700 secured on land adjoining the Town Street in Bulkington, three houses recently erected on it, and land in Sowe (Toones Pieces), to William Wagstaff of Attleborough, Nuneaton, butcher, 31 July 1864 (copy) (CR 715/338).
